New DESIGN GALLERY out now!!!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
A large piece of fabric
Fabric scissors
A sewing machine*
A ruler
A pencil
A piece of elastic**
A piece of ribbon
OPTIONAL: A lighter***
*If you don't have a sewing machine, you can also make this dress with a needle and thread, it will just take longer.
**If you don't have any elastic, a rubber band will work as well.
***This is completely optional, and is only needed in Step 10, which is an optional step. If you decide to do this step, make sure you are VERY CAREFUL and have a parent/guardian's permission.
Disclaimer: This dress is for dolls. It's not meant for human sizing, and although you could probably make it work, I would advise looking elsewhere for dress patterns and sizing.
Measure your doll from the shoulders to where ever you want your dress to end.
(For this doll, it's 12cm)
Trace the outline for your dress. The length should be your measurement from Step 1, and the width is up to you, it just has to be wide enough to fit the doll.
(For this doll, it's 12cmx15cm)
Hem the top of the fabric, making sure you have room to fit your elastic.
(For this doll, it's about 2cm)
Hem the bottom of the dress. This hem can be big or small.
(For this doll, it's about 1cm)
Attach a safety pin to your elastic, then start threading the elastic through the top hem.
Stop threading the elastic when the end without a safety pin reaches the start of the hem tube. Then sew a line to attach the elastic there.
Stretch the elastic through the hem tube until it is tight enough for you doll's waist. Make sure it will be able to fit! Then sew the elastic to the fabric the same way you did in Step 6.
(For this doll, there was about 4cm of extra elastic)
Fold the dress in half (with right sides together) and sew along the edge. You might have to go over the ends a few times to make it very secure.
Cut a piece of ribbon that's the same length as your measurement from Step 1.
(For this doll, it's 12cm)
THIS STEP IS OPTIONAL. IF YOU DO IT, BE VERY CAUTIOUS!
Get a lighter and pass the end of the ribbon through the flame very quickly. This makes the ribbon not fray. Make sure you don't have the ribbon in the flame for too long, or it will catch on fire.
Turn the dress right side out and put it on your doll. Tie the ribbon around the waist to make a matching belt and you're done! Make sure you're gentle, sometimes things will rip when you're turning them right side out.
